Missing Parts
I bought this mower for my son in October. He just now needs to mow his grass and opens the box to put the lawn mower together. He finds the hardware pack missing and is not able use his mower. He will call the 1-800 number that was in the box and see if they will send him a hardware pack so he can put it together, MTD said it was not their problem, I sent Amazon an email and they resolved the problem prompt and fast.....They are a excellent company......

Amazon was kind to me.
Mower has engine surge problem and gasoline cap leakage. I so wanted this mower to work as my trimming mower.

very good mower
This is a very good mower and was easy to put together.

Starts on first pull every time.

good mower, glad I bought it, can't beat it for the money!!
I bought a used LB 10684. A neighbor broke the aluminum deck on my old LB. Had it for 25 years. Now I won't have to replace plugs, mix oil. But it was great, light.

I had to replace the carb (could have rebuilt) aftr 18 years. Hope this one holds up as well.....

    The Lawn-Boy 10683 vs a Goat
    Maintenance:

The Lawn-Boy 10683 Insight will periodically stop for no apparent reason in the middle of your yard and refuse to start again until you've wasted an afternoon trying to fix it and put it back in the garage, disgusted.

A goat will require feeding, veterinary care, and constant supervision. It may eat random shards of metal and kill itself. However, a new goat costs less than this mower.

    Winner: Goat.

    Efficacy:

The Lawn-Boy will cut your grass, provided that you cut it yesterday and you only want to "take a little off the top." Otherwise, it will choke on its gorge of wet, mulchy clippings as they accumulate in the undercarriage.

A goat will eat your grass, your flowers, your shrubs, and your neighbor's children.

    Winner: Goat.

    Environmental Impact:

The Lawn-Boy will belch white smoke as it gloriously incinerates its oil if you have the audacity to push it up a slight incline. Gasoline will also dribble out of the cap if you don't fasten it with a torque wrench.

A goat will crap all over everything.

    Winner: Goat!

Summation: Get a goat, this mower is garbage.

    Shuda Gotta LawnBoy

I can't figure out why I wasted my time trying to fix the old junker, I don't know why I trawled craigslist looking for second hand mowers and I don't know why I thought I would luck out on a good bargain Mower (you know the brands). Eventually after touring 3 Box stores I went to professional Mower shop to ask for advise - they steered me in direstion of the Lawn Boy as good value for money and worth the premium over lesser mowers.

I am so glad I took their advise cos I love this mower, and I venture you will too if - you want a great looking lawn, great mower design, easy handling, and the option to repair vs replace.

I'm kinda nuts about my lawn. With my last mower I had to cut the grass twice - in opposite directions - to get the even cut I wanted ... not anymore.

Plus, because of the LB's wide wheels, I don't get the "wheel ridges" you get next day or day after when a heavy mower / narrow wheels / and damp grass conspire to fold the grass over while mowing, etc.

Plus, In this category all the other grass bags are smaller than the LB's so I can pick up more ... but also, the LB has a design that the bag really fills the bag ... unlike last mower which did have big bag but only filled 50% before dropping.

Plus I love the design, from the Starting pull, to the EZ off bag, to the EZ set wheels - The machine is a dream to operate.

Plus, the tank of gas lasts forever ... Ok, I made this one up, but you should seriously consider this mower.

    Better than I expected!
I spent months looking at all the different reel mowers before buying one for my new house. I wanted to get a reel mower, not for the environmental reason, but because the noise and hassle of a gas mower wasn't something I wanted to take on. I settled on this model because of the reviews saying the bearings were nice, and it was more robustly built than the Scott's with its nylon gears. Since I'd done my research, I expected to get a mower that would cut grass, leave some spots, and not touch any weeds/leaves. I was prepared for that. Surprisingly, this thing actually shears off about half of the dandelions I've come across, neatly shears off broadleaf weeds, and has cut up leaves I'm too lazy to rake up. Our lawn is awfully bumpy, and this mower doesn't miss a beat. Even as the wheels bounce around on the ruts and bumps, the blades keep on whirring.

The noise? Yeah, it's noisy. Screeching metal on metal. I wish it were quieter, but I can deal with it.

    Great mower, bad bag.
The short version: It's worth it and not hard to push.

I've been using my Gilmour 20" Push Reel mower for the better part of 10 months now and I feel it is a good time to give a review of it's performance. I purchased it because I wanted to handle my own lawn, on my own terms with no loud mower sound which would allow me to mow earlier and be done sooner. Being in Houston, TX during the summer is a pain, so the sooner you start, the sooner you finish and lower your chance of heat stroke, but starting at 7 AM may upset your neighbors with a gas-powered mower. I'm not an environmental guy, but it is "green."

I purchased this model after reading the reviews and seeing that it comes with a bagger, which I found to make it the best value. The models offered at my local home improvement store were limited, overpriced and offered no accessories.

It is so much quieter than a gas mower. It's not whisper quiet, but it is dramatically more quiet than a gas powered one. The height adjustment it easy to work with and gives an option of 5 different settings. The cutting ability is very good, but you do need to find a pass technique that you'll be happy with. I've tried all I could think of: 1 pass leaves tall blades and should not be used unless you really don't care about your lawn's look. An overlapping method involves overlapping your work by half the length of the blades though you'll still see some very sparse, rebellious blades, but no more than a traditional mower. Overlapping is best when you have let your lawn overgrow. The last method is my preferred method and I call it "twice as nice." Twice as nice involves literally covering your pass twice, either using the same direction or reversing and going over the same grass twice. I have seen no rogue blades when I do that method.

Using this type of mower will make you change some decisions about your lawn care, namely mulching. Being originally from Louisiana, I'm used to using cypress mulch, which has large pieces of wood in it. Bad idea, so next time I'm going with a fine mulch. Push reel mowers do not like obstacles, especially thick twigs and pieces of wood. Be sure to clear your lawn before you mow, or keep and eye out as you make passes. If you do get something stuck, it's nothing to spin the blades backwards to get rid of the offending piece of wood, just be sure not to mow barefoot.

The bag on the model is really bad. The hooks to connect are small and the strap/latch system at the top disconnects too easily. I never used it but a few times, because with weekly mowing, the clippings were so fine it wasn't necessary. I say go without it. Additionally I should mention that the spongy handle cover began to rip, so I covered it with electrical tape to save it. Totally worth it.

We have approximately 2500-3000 sq ft of lawn with St Augustine grass and 4 young trees (2 oak & 2 silver ash) and I am done in about 1 hour. It's worth it if you're wanting to break away from using a gas powered machine and all the fumes and noise.

If you have a lawn with a lot of branches, I would suggest going with a gas powered mower unless you're comfortable with a lot of manual pickup. Our trees don't shed much because of their age, so I can't comment on how the performance is affected by a lot of leaf coverage.

    NO exercise here
I bought this mower to mow a little strip of grass in my backyard by the house fenced in for my litte dog. I thought this would be perfect to keep the grass cut down because it is hard to get the riding mower in and out ot the small yard. This mower works great on the grass but here in SC we have what they call Highway grass that grows wild in our yards and it will not mow it.. It is like a tough tall thin weed.. So this mower did not work for me.. But when I read the reveiw about this mower I thought it said it would mow all grass... hmmmm.. not!!

So now it is parked in my neighbors shed just to get it out of my yard..

American Lawn Mower Company 1815-18 18-Inch Reel Mower

    Amazon.com Product Description
The business end of this hand pushed reel mower is solid, sharp, and easy to use, with five heat-treated, knife-sharp tempered alloy steel blades that can be adjusted for varying grass heights from 1/2 to 2-1/4 inches. With its 10-inch wheels, radial tires, 18-inch cutting width, and 2-inch welded shrub bar, this mower should enable you to cross whatever terrain and reach whatever hard-to-access rogue patches of grass you desire. Plus, the soft foam cushion on the handlebar is a nice -- and much appreciated -- touch. However, assembly can be a headache, even though the only tool you need is a wrench. The instructions could be clearer, and the handle parts could fit together better. This product is backed by a limited 2-year warranty.

    Made in China
I googled lawnmowers made in the USA and came up with a site that said that this brand and model is made in the USA. So I got it. The box clearly says "Made in China." Oh well. Hard to find anything made in the USA anymore. It cuts the lawn OK, though. I'm glad I got this type of non-motorized lawnmower.

    Great mower
This mower has exceeded my expectations, besides being eco-friendly this mower is very easy to use. (72 yr. female) I have a small area that needs mowing on occasion. The park I live in does our lawns if we want, but the large mowers were doing more harm than good. The most important thing is you have to clear the lawn of any debris.

    Good first reel mower
Picked up this reel mower to see how a "current" reel mower works. Love how light it is, which makes it very easy to push around my 1/3 of an acre yard. I definitely enjoy using it instead of my gas rotary mower, but it won't end up replacing it outright. As you may have read if you're interested in reel mowers but haven't used one (except maybe those old 50 lb clunkers) it cuts a "lawn" quite nicely under the right conditions. The scissor action cuts the grass blades quite evenly without tearing which is what my old rotary mower would do... It doesn't get the long tall grass stems, so you need to cut often (once per week during the spring, less often in the heat probably) and can't let it get out of control or you'll just be pushing over the grass, not cutting it. I imagine after a rain its going to be rough if the grass is bent over, but I haven't tried it yet.

So basically, if you have a nice even lawn, and plan on cutting it every weekend, this mower will give you a great cut, and will end up being better for your grass than a rotary. If you have weeds or a patchy, bumpy lawn, or don't like to cut your grass routinely, you'll be disappointed with a reel mower... I personally haven't run into too many problems with sticks getting caught in the blades as others have reported with reel mowers. I have a fairly wooded yard, and there are plenty of twigs and sticks around, but they don't seem to get caught up all that often. Maybe because I try not to run them over much and toss them out of the way when I'm walking by... YMMV

My one complaint with this mower is the handle - its made of 5 pieces of aluminum tubing screwed together with wing nuts. They end up loosening up on me occasionally, and I'm not 100% certain that the handle will outlive the wheels or blades...
